arrest handcuffs words darkblue space300WESTERN KENTUCKY (11/10/17) — A Paducah man is accused of walking off from jail yesterday afternoon, stealing and wrecking a car, assaulting a deputy, stealing his cruiser, which he also crashed and leading police on a multi-county chase.

Kentucky State Police said James A. Booker, 34, was an inmate at Keeton Correctional Institution in Paducah and walked off some time before 1 p.m., after which McCracken County Deputy Sheriff Roger Simon contacted KSP Post 1 to report a red car headed east at a high rate of speed on I-24 in Marshall County. While making the report, Simon told KSP the red Chevrolet Cobalt had wrecked.

When Simon stopped at the collision, police said Booker, who had been driving the Cobalt, assaulted the deputy and then stole his cruiser. A KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer located the cruiser headed east on I-24 and began a pursuit into Caldwell County. Near the the 75 mile marker, Booker crashed the deputy’s cruiser.

KSP charged Booker with first-degree robbery, receiving stolen property less than $10,000 or more, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree fleeing or evading police/motor vehicle, third-degree assault/police officer, reckless driving, first-degree wanton endangerment/police officer, second-degree wanton endangerment, driving on a DUI suspended license – second offense and he was charged as a fugitive from another state.

In Caldwell County, Booker was charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police/motor vehicle, four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, speeding, reckless driving and operating on a suspended license.

Paducah Police Department is investigating the theft of the Cobalt.

KSP was assisted by law enforcement from Marshall, Lyon and Caldwell counties.
