HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (11/10/17) — Though final figures are still being tabulated, Hopkinsville Community College officials said contributions continue to come into Hopkinsville Community College Foundation’s 11th Annual Gala and Scholarship Auction.

Organizers anticipate record proceeds from the event held Nov. 3.

Prior to the start of the auction, college officials revealed Beth Mann, owner of WKDZ and WHVO radio stations, pledged $50,000 in memory of D.J. and Beth Everett to the new Emerging Technologies Building under construction on the Hopkinsville campus, college officials stated in a press release.

A classroom will be named for the Everetts, thanks to Mann's gift.

According to Yvette Eastham, the Foundation's Executive Director, more than 300 guests attended the event, spending generously on silent and live auction items that generated more than $35,000. The live auction featured trips to The Netherlands and Destin, Elizabeth McCoy's University of Kentucky Trustee's seats for the UK v. University of Louisville basketball game, Diana Shelton's perennially popular and famous coconut cake, and filet mignon steaks from Fox Creek Cattle Company. Michael Harris of Harris Real Estate and Auction brought the flare of a professional auctioneer to the proceedings to the delight of the crowd.

The highlight of the evening; however, was a surprise presentation made to longtime Elkton resident Bryan Blount.

Blount has served for decades in various roles with HCC, including as president of the Foundation Board and a director on the college board. The nonagenarian was introduced by special guest Yadel González, a 2012 graduate of Todd County Central High School, 2014 graduate of HCC and recipient of the college's most prestigious honor, the Spirit Cup. She is a 2016 graduate of the University of Kentucky.

González, whom organizers kept cloistered from the audience until time for the revelation of the recognition of Blount related his powerful influence on her life. González immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico with her parents as a young child. Blount, who she met at St. Susan Catholic Church in Elkton, encouraged her educational aspirations from her entry to public schools and throughout high school, where she graduated top of her class. He continued to mentor and encourage her pursuit of her educational goals, encouraging and supporting her as he has so many others through the decades. González thanked Mr. Blount for believing in her, and acknowledged his great influence on her decision to apply for medical school. HCC President Dr. Alissa Young, moved by González's story, thanked Blount for his long time, consistent service to the students of HCC, noting, "We thank you for decades of service to HCC and the HCC Foundation Board," calling his selfless service inspirational.

HCC Foundation President Jo Glover stated, "We deeply appreciate the continued faithful support of the community for the HCC Foundation Gala, and are especially grateful to our sustaining sponsor, Planters Bank as well as our numerous table sponsors. It was a joy to honor Bryan Blount for his decades of service to the college, and my heart was full as I listened to Yadel González share what Bryan's influence on her life has meant to her. Everything we work for as a Foundation is to support the mission of Hopkinsville Community College.”
