WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (2/27/13) - After trailing by two points at halftime, Henderson County used an 18-2 run in the third quarter to defeat Webster County 57-41 in the championship game of the Sixth District Tournament Wednesday night at Doug Hines Gym at Union County High School.
Webster, which advances to this week’s Second Region Tournament at Caldwell County, led by as many as eight points in the first half before the 4th-ranked Lady Colonels closed the gap to 22-20 at intermission. The Lady Trojans then suffered through one of their worst shooting quarters of the season, managing just 2-of-12 shooting from the field along with a dismal 3-of-9 from the free throw line.
Meanwhile, Henderson hit 9-of-13 from the field, including one 3-pointer during the 21-7 scoring advantage in the period. Webster could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
“There was about a four minute stretch in that third quarter where we just couldn’t make a basket and we couldn’t make a stop on the defensive end,” noted first-year head coach Parker McCalister. “But each kid played really hard tonight and fought until the end. Henderson is a very good team and coached by one of the best coaches in the state. We just came up short tonight.” It was the sixth straight district crown for Henderson, which improved to a very impressive 23-2 on the season, including three wins over WCHS. The Lady Trojans were very aggressive in the opening quarter, attacking the basket and forcing 10 HCHS turnovers in the open half.
Webster led 12-8 at the first break and built a 17-10 lead midway through the second quarter on back-to-back hoops by Darrian McNary. But the in-your-face defense seemed to wain in the final minutes of the period as Henderson went on a 10-5 run to close out the frame, several of the baskets were driving layups that were uncontested by the WC defense. That seemed to set the stage for the decisive third quarter when the Lady Colonels opened the period with a 10-0 spurt and never looked back.
“We will get back in the gym and practice and hopefully make a run in the regional (tournament) this week,” McCalister added.
McNary led Webster with 18 points along with 14 rebounds. Mariah Herrera finished with eight points and Kolbi Edens added a pair of 3-pointers for six points. Macye Davis finished with four points while Bailey Townsend scored two points. Both teams committed 16 turnovers while Webster held a 39-36 rebounding edge.
