Union, Hopkins Central No-hit Lady Trojans

wc sb1WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (4/3/13) - Webster County High School softball team suffered its second district loss last Thursday, falling to Union County behind a no-hitter from Abby Hosman. The Lady Trojans continued to struggle with the bats on Friday as Hopkins County Central used the second straight no-hitter to earn an 8-0 victory.

Webster is back in action Friday, participating in the Clarksville Invitational in Clarksville TN.

The district-rival Bravettes broke open a tight game with a five-run third inning to hand the Lady Trojans their second loss of the season last Thursday in Morganfield. Holding a slim 2-0 lead, Union sent nine batters to the plate in the rally and used two walks, two WCHS fielding errors and a pair of hits put five runs on the scoreboard for the commanding 7-0 lead. A two-run triple by Heather Ogletree highlighted the uprising.

UCHS pitcher Abby Hosman completely dominated the Lady Trojan bats, tossing a ‘perfect game’ while striking out 10 and not allowing a single Webster baserunner. Hosman faced the minimum of 21 batters during the no-hitter with only one ball reaching the outfield on an easy flyout to center.

Union finished the game with 11 hits and three walks, along with three critical Webster fielding errors.

For the second straight day, the combination of top-quality pitching and dismal hitting led to another no-hitter by a WCHS opponent.

Lady Storm hurler Cassie Gordon breezed through the Webster County lineup with ease, facing just 21 batters in seven innings while striking out five.

Gordon allowed just one base runner as Kayleigh Wood reached on an error by the Lady Storm shortstop. But Wood was gunned down at first by centerfielder Jana McNary when she strayed off first base to far on a fly ball to center field off the bat of Georgia Keeney. McNary made the catch and then rifled the ball to first for the inning-ending double play. The remaining 19 outs by the Lady Trojans were all recorded by Central infielders.

Webster’s starting pitcher Kayleigh Wood looked strong in the early innings, allowing one run in the second inning on a single, hit batter, walk and a fielder’s choice.

Central then used a big third inning to take control of the game. Sending nine hitters to the plate, the Lady Storm scored four runs on four hits along with one walk and one WC fielding error. A two-run rally in the fourth off Bailey Townsend pushed the lead to 7-0. McNary opened the inning with a solo homer over the right field fence.

Central’s final run came in the fifth on a walk to Kayla Smith and an RBI-single from McNary. The Lady Storm finished with 10 hits.
