Lady Trojans Improved to 6-6 with Five Wins

Trojans Softball 300WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (4/10/13) - Webster County High School softball team enjoyed a good week, powering past McLean County and then picking up two victories in the Play-It-Again Classic in Clarksville, TN. WCHS went 5-2 over Spring Break, including a pair of forfeit wins in the tournament. Webster (6-6) is back in action Thursday hosting Muhlenberg County and then on the road Saturday to participate in the Hopkins County Central Tournament.

The Lady Trojans used a balanced hitting attack to outlast the visiting Lady Cougars last Tuesday in Dixon. Jerrica Jones led the 11-hit attack with a 3-for-4 day at the plate including a home run, triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Kaylyn Winders added two hits and two RBI while Maddy Yates added a two-run single as well.

McLean scored four times in the first inning off WCHS starter Kayleigh Woods but three of the runs were unearned on three Webster fielding errors. The Lady Trojans answered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the frame.

WC took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run triple from Jones but McLean tied the game in the top of the third with a two-out single to make it 5-5. The see-saw battle continued as the Lady Trojans pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the third for a 7-5 advantage. McLean’s final runs came in the top of the fourth on three hits and three more WCHS fielding miscues for a 9-7 lead.

Webster got one run back in the bottom of the inning and then tied the game on an RBI-single from Christian Papineau in the bottom of the fifth. The Lady Trojans then put together the go-ahead rally in the bottom of the sixth, chasing home two runs. Papineau, Woods, Macye Davis and Kolbi Edens all had RBI-hits in the win.

WCHS opened action in the Play-It-Again Classic at Heritage Park in Clarksville, TN on Friday night against a very strong Shelbyville Central squad. Central pitching ace Jami Jolnser limited Webster to just three hits in the four inning contest which was cut short due to a time limit. Kolbi Edens stroked two singles in the contest while Kayleigh Woods had the only other single.

Edens cruised the Shelbyville lineup in the first two innings but then ran into problems in the top of the third. After four walks and four hits, SCHS had grabbed a 6-0 lead to take control of the game. Shelbyville added three more runs in the top of the fourth on three hits and three more Webster fielding errors.

East Carter 2

After picking up a forfeit win over Henry County, TN, the Lady Trojans made it two wins in a row on Saturday with a hard-fought victory over East Carter. Trailing 2-0, the WC girls rallied in their final at-bat to pick up the win. Kelsey Mays started the rally with a lead-off single. One out later, Christian Papineau followed with another single and then both Lady Trojans sprinted home on a double by Jerrica Jones to the tie the game at 2-2. Kaylyn Winders kept the rally going with a walk and then Kayleigh Wood delivered a two-run double to put Webster on top 4-2. Macye Davis stroked a double to drive in pinch-runner Kari Wood to set the final score. Jones and Kayleigh Woods both had two hits in the victory. Woods also picked up the pitching win, allowing just five hits and three strikeouts.

Despite the loss, the WCHS girls have shown much improvement over the past week. The Lady Storm no-hit Webster in an easy 8-0 win last week. In Monday’s contest, the Lady Trojans gave the strong Central squad all they wanted. Central pitching ace Chelsey Gordon, who fired the no-hitter March 29, allowed just two hits and struck out eight on Monday. She also walked one which proved to be the only run Webster could muster against the hard-throwing righthander.

Gordon had breezed through the WCHS lineup, facing the minimum of 15 hitters in five innings and not allowing a hit. That changed in the top of the sixth when she hit Maddy Yates with a pitch to lead off the inning. Yates moved to second on Kelsey Mays’ fielder’s choice and then on to third when the Lady Storm misplayed a grounder by Georgia Keeney. One out later, Jerrica Jones broke-up the no-hit bid with a line-drive double to the right-centerfield gap to chase home Yates. Jones was caught between second and third on the play and tagged out for the final out of the inning.

Central (7-3) had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on two-out, two-run single by Paige Chavis off WCHS starter Kolbi Edens. The Webster senior looked strong on the mound allowing just three hits while her teammates made some outstanding defensive plays behind her.

Webster made a bid to tie the game in its final at-bat as Kaylyn Winders lead off the seventh with the second hit of the game. But Gordon fanned the next two hitters and then enticed a pop-up to second base from Edens to end the game.
