Trojan Baseball Team Wins Two in Lincoln County Tourney

Trojans Baseball 300WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (4/10/13) - The Webster County baseball went 2-2 over Spring Break at the Lincoln County Classic but fell to Madisonville North-Hopkins on Monday in eight innings. Webster now stands at 8-10 and will travel to Hopkins Central on Friday.

Peyton Carver stroked four singles and proved to be the winning run for the Maroons in the bottom of the eighth Monday night at Elmer Kelley Field in Madisonville.

The Maroons (5-8) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory. With the game tied 3-3, Carver led off the bottom of the eight with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and stoke third on a strike out. He then scored the game-winner on a single to centerfield from Blayde Weaver.

The Trojans provided a bit of excitement just to get to extra innings, putting together a rally in the seventh to tie the game at 3-all. Logan Prow and Jalen Wallace smacked back-to-back singles off Maroon starter Dylan Ladd. Tyler Hedrick then delivered another clutch single to score Prow and tie the game. But Ladd retired Brennan Pritchett and Reese Johnson to end the threat.

“Our seniors stepped up for us and got the big hits and put the ball in play when we needed them,” noted WCHS coach Tom Welshans.

Trailing 1-0, the Trojans rallied for two runs in the top of the second taking advantage of consecutive fielding errors by the Maroons. Madison Melton then stroked a sacrifice fly to center to give Webster a 2-1 lead.

But Webster allowed Madisonville right back into the game in the third inning with a two-run rally. The Maroons stroked four consecutive hits to score twice, the final run on a hard collision at the plate by courtesy runner Jarrett Noffsinger and WC catcher Jalen Wallace.

“We kind of relaxed in the middle innings. We didn’t battle like we needed ... win every inning ... that’s how we have to play to be successful. We didn’t do the little things like get bunts down and we had 12 fly ball outs, ” Welshans added.

Both teams went quietly the rest of the way until Webster tied the game in the seventh and the Maroons pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Webster senior Tyler Hedrick fired a complete-game, three-hitter and struck out 12 in his finest game of his career on the mound in the opening game of the Lincoln County Classic last Friday.

“Tyler pitched very well. He had command of all of his pitches,” noted Coach Welshans. “We got some early runs and we were able to relax and settle in. I’m very proud of these seniors, they’re playing hard and not letting this season get away from them.”

Webster scored single runs in each of the first two innings and then went on top 7-0 in the top of the fifth. Leading 8-0 and Hedrick in total command on the mound, the Trojans put the game away with an eight-run rally in the seventh.

Logan Prow led the Trojans with three hits while Jalen Wallace, Brennan Pritchett and Hedrick added two hits each.

The Trojans posted another ‘come-from-behind’ victory in the second game of the Lincoln County Classic last Friday with their biggest inning of the year. The Trojans ripped eight hits in the fourth inning to push across 10 runs for the victory. Webster trailed 8-1 after Bell County batted in the top of the fifth. But the Trojan bats came alive in the bottom of the frame with the big inning.

“We put together hits and got their starting pitcher out of the game. That really opened the door for us and gave us the confidence and momentum,” Welshans added.

WCHS used the 10-run frame to grab a 11-8 lead. Bell County got a single run in the sixth but couldn’t catch the Trojans in the seventh.

Madison Melton picked up the pitching victory while Pritchett came in for relief and earned the save. Pritchett also led the Trojans offensively with three hits while Hedrick, Johnson, Hunter Nichols and Mickey Morse added two hits each.

The homestanding Pioneers took advantage of a depleted WCHS pitching staff to get the win Saturday in the final game of the Classic. “We just ran out of pitching but we still had our opportunities to win the game. We just didn’t cash-in on our scoring chances but the kids battled the entire game.” Lincoln took the early lead off WC starter Kyle Hayes, scoring three runs in the second and two more in the third. The lead grew to 6-0 after four innings. Webster broke through with a three-run rally in its final at-bat. Reese Johnson led the six-hit attack with four safeties. Logan Prow had two hits.
