Trojans Pick Up First Loss of the Football Season

Trojans Football 300WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (9/5/13) - The 2013 Trojan football team went in search of that second win in a row last Friday night in Dixon, hosting a Muhlenberg County squad that was hungry for its first win of the season.

After a second-quarter touchdown and early lead from Webster County, it was all Mustangs the rest of the way as they displayed a powerful running game and took advantage of two ‘pick-six’ interceptions for a convincing 39-6 victory.

Muhlenberg’s talented running back Anthony Mason was more than the Trojans could handle as he rushed for 207 yards on just 12 carries, including three long touchdown runs, sparking the Mustangs to 359 yards on the ground.

It took a while for either offense to get going on the hot and muggy night as both defensive units were strong.

Webster got outstanding defensive efforts with drive-killing, quarterback sacks from Chad Rauch and Travis Springfield on Muhlenberg’s first two possessions.

The Trojans then took advantage of a Mustang fumble late in the first quarter that opened the door for its only score of the night. Senior lineman James Bruce pounced on a loose ball at the Mustangs’ 17-yard line to give WCHS great field position.

WC’s sophomore quarterback Dillon Baty quickly grabbed the momentum with a 8-yard pass to Jammin Warren to close out the first period. And on the second play of the second quarter, Baty hooked up with senior receiver Peyton Bussell for a 9-yard touchdown strike. The PAT was blocked but WCHS owned a 6-0 lead with 11:09 remaining in the period.

That would be the bright spot for the Webster offense as the Mustangs unleashed a potent offense, despite the fact that starting senior quarterback Chase Deason didn’t even suit up in the contest because of a concussion suffered in the season-opening loss to Ohio County.

Lightning-quick Mason jump-started the Mustangs with a 65-yard gallop on the first play of the possession. Two plays later, freshman quarterback Hunter Combs zipped a perfect spiral to Neil Kirkpatrick for an 8-yard touchdown. The point-after was successful, giving the Mustangs a 7-6 lead.

The blitzing Muhlenberg defense stalled Webster into three quick plays for only four yards, forcing a very short punt and regaining possession on Webster’s 38-yard line. It didn’t long for the MHS offense to click once again as Combs hooked up with Kirkpatrick for the second straight possession on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 6:45 remaining in the half. The PAT from Nick Huff split the uprights giving MHS a 13-6 lead.

The Mustangs moved all the way to the Webster 4 on their next possession but a strong goal-line-stand from the Trojans halted the drive. It was Webster’s most impressive defensive play of game, holding Muhlenberg out of the end zone and taking over on downs.

But Webster couldn’t move the ball and gave it right back to MHS with less than two minutes left in the quarter. The Combs-to-Kirkpatrick combo struck again, this time from eight yards out to give Muhlenberg a 19-6 advantage with 1:19 to go in the first half.

Mason, who rushed for 135 yards in the first half, also hurt the Trojans on defense from his free safety position, snaring a Baty pass and sprinting 45 yards to the end zone early in the third quarter and a 25-6 lead.

Webster seemed to regain its composure on the next possession, moving the ball 21 yards on four plays. But a critical penalty and quarterback sack of Baty killed the drive. To make things worse, the Trojans mishandled the snap on the punt attempt, allowing Muhlenberg to recover the ball on the WCHS 32.

After a three yard loss, Mason ran for his final TD of the night, a sprint around the left side for 35 yards.

Muhlenberg put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with a 34-yard touchdown off an interception to set the final score.

Webster’s sophomore quarter Dillon Baty finished the game 8-for-21 and 126 yards. Bussell was his primary target, grabbing seven passes for 48 yards. Muhlenberg (1-1) focused its attention on WC’s speedy running back Tre’ Wright who gained 102 yards against Hopkins County Central in the season-opening victory. The Mustangs limited Wright to just 27 yards in Friday’s contest.

Webster (1-1) is back at Trojan Field on Friday, hosting county-rival Union County. The Braves will be looking for their first win of the season after taking a pounding last week in their season-opener from the state’s top-ranked AA school Caldwell County 57-20.
