irs 300WASHINGTON (4/11/14) — The United States House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee has for two years investigated the abuse of power at the Internal Revenue Service.

Evidence revealed Lois Lerner, former Director of the Exempt Organizations Division, is the central figure behind the IRS misconduct targeting conservative groups.

The Committee’s review of Lerner’s emails and other documents clearly shows a timeline of events in which Ms. Lerner responded to calls from top Democrats, including President Obama’s closest allies, regarding these conservative targets.

Ms. Lerner was yesterday held in contempt by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Chaired by Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA). This after Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) announced the Ways and Means Committee voted out a criminal referral letter to Department of Justice Attorney General Eric Holder regarding actions taken by the IRS. Camp urged Holder to take a serious review of the evidence uncovered through the Committee’s investigation to determine whether Lerner violated criminal statutes.

“I was outraged to learn the Obama Administration’s IRS was targeting applicants for tax-exempt status based on political leanings. The fact that the IRS would target groups based solely on their political persuasions is a shameful abuse of government power that must be brought to an end. Targeting groups based on their ideological beliefs, or for exercising their First Amendment rights, is unconstitutional and another example of this Administration’s disregard for the law,” said Whitfield. “I support Chairmen Camp and Issa in their efforts and look forward to working further with them and other Members of Congress to clean-up the IRS.”
