WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (3/6/13) – The Sebree City Council was in session on Monday night. A month after the city received a less than stellar auditor's report and council members called the five month absence of Mayor Ron Todd into question, the only thing on the agenda was approval of the old minutes.
City Clerk Mary Thomas informed the council that Mayor Todd was supposed to be at the meeting, but at the last minute he had to leave due to blood pressure issues. In his absence the council appointed councilman Ozzie O’Nan mayor pro tem. Also absent from the meeting were councilmen Pete O’Nan and Kenny Wright.
After the council quickly dispatched the old minutes, they opened the floor for other business. None of the council had any issues, and O’Nan called for a motion to adjourn when a member of the audience questioned the status of the city’s dealings with the mayor.
In February councilman Mark Little said, “The Mayor hasn’t been to a meeting since September. We, as a council, need to address it. We were elected by the citizens. I think the city is entitled to an answer. We’ve got problems with streets that need to be addressed.”
“There are a lot of streets falling apart,” councilman Kenny Wright agreed.
“We were elected to do a job, and I feel like we’re not doing it,” said Little. “It’s obvious from the city’s financial report that we’re heading in the wrong direction.”
The council then voted to instruct City Attorney Dorin Luck to draft a letter to the mayor and to look into the city’s bylaws on attendance requirements.
When questioned about the status of that, Luck said that he had sent a letter to the council members last week, but the content of that letter was exempted from the Public Records Act.
Council members Ozzie O’Nan, Mark Little and Harold Orrick said that they had received the letter but would not comment. Council member Brenda Margelot said that she had not yet seen the letter.
The Journal-Enterprise has submitted a letter to Sebree City Clerk Mary Thomas requesting a copy of the letter under the Kentucky Open Records Act.
