deer cross 300WESTERN KENTUCKY (10/5/13) — With the onset of cooler fall temperatures, Kentucky's whitetail deer are on the move. Unfortunately, they are moving across roadways and into the paths of motorists.
 
The time of annual deer mating season and hunting seasons also play a major factor in deer becoming more visible.
 
According to Kentucky State Police, deer account for more human deaths than any other animal.
 
The Insurance Information Institute estimates more than 1.6 million deer-vehicle collisions annually resulting in approximately 150 deaths. While the percentage of deer-motorists deaths are lower in Kentucky than many U.S. states, the danger and risk remain.
 
October, November and December represent the three months when most deer collisions occur. The likelihood of collisions occur within the hours of 5 to 8 p.m. and 5 to 8 a.m.
 
It's archery season for either gender of deer in Zones 1 and 2 now through Jan. 20 in western Kentucky. Christian, Crittenden and Caldwell are included in Zone 1. Daviess, Hopkins, Warren, Webster, Muhlenberg and Henderson are included in Zone 2.
 
Crossbow for both deer genders is now through Oct. 20, and Nov. 9 through Dec. 31; muzzleloader season for both genders of deer is Oct. 19-20 and Dec. 14 through Dec. 22 .
 
There is a Youth-Only Firearms Weekend Oct. 12-13 and a Free Youth Weekend Dec. 28-29 for both genders of deer.
 
Modern gun season is Nov. 9 through Nov. 24 for both deer gender in Zones 1 and 2.
