BOWLING GREEN, KY (12/11/12) – Faculty and staff from WKU’s Hoffman Institute and the Department of Geography and Geology are in China conducting research on a number of karst-related issues, including collaborative research in rural Guangxi Province addressing the geochemistry associated with carbon cycling.
 
This past Monday, the team, led by University Distinguished Professor of Hydrogeology and Director of the Hoffman Institute Dr. Chris Groves, participated in the annual meeting of the Karst Dynamic Laboratory’s Academic Committee in Guilin, China. The meeting drew participants from throughout China and from the U.S. Brazil, Slovakia, Japan, and elsewhere.
 
Wendy Decroix, departmental office manager, delivered a lecture titled “A Brief History of Mammoth Cave National Park” to this international group of scientists, which provided an overview of the cave’s history from early Native Americans through to Stephen Bishop and Floyd Collins, and up to the new visitor’s center.
 
The meeting attendees numbered about 60 (divided into two groups: those who have been to Mammoth Cave and those that haven’t but are dreaming about it one day) and were especially entertained to see the various iterations of “cave outfits” that tourists had worn over time when visiting Mammoth Cave.
 
Other presentations were made by WKU team members on a variety of topics.
