BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (2/9/13) – The Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center’s Summer Youth Theater program and Orchestra Kentucky of Bowling Green announce a collaboration to present “West Side Story” this coming summer. Inspired by Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, “West Side Story” is a tale of two gangs in New York and the star-crossed love story of Tony and Maria.
Orchestra Kentucky will provide the full, live orchestral accompaniment, as composed by Leonard Bernstein, with Jeff Reed as music director and conductor.
“We are excited to partner with Orchestra Kentucky to present our annual summer youth theater project and believe that our community will enjoy participating in this project as a member of the production team, a performer or as a patron,” said Tom Tomlinson, Executive Director of SKyPAC.
Tomlinson went on to say, “Local and regional talent will be selected to produce and perform this exciting and groundbreaking piece of Musical Theater. Not only is West Side Story a wonderful theatrical piece, many consider it as holding a unique place in the evolution of the American Musical. We are proud to produce it for the Southern Kentucky community”
Applications to be considered as an artistic team member are being accepted with the team likely in place by the end of March. Once the artistic team is selected auditions for the cast will be scheduled in June. The production will be cast with age appropriate actors, singers and dancers from high school age through adult. The production will rehearse in July and August, with performances August 22nd through the 26th.
“Part of Orchestra Kentucky’s mission is music education for all ages. We see this partnership as a wonderful way to provide the community with the opportunity to participate in a high-quality production of this classic work. There is no better way to appreciate a musical masterpiece than by actually performing it,” said Jeff Reed, Orchestra Kentucky’s Music Director.
