CALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. (3/25/13) – On March 9 through March 12, the Calloway County Middle School Academic Team traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the KAAC academic team state tournament against students from over 230 middle schools from around the state. After three days of competition, the Lakers brought home several recognitions and trophies. Governor Steve Beshear presided over the awards ceremony.
Mallory Hlava was named the third place finisher for the Future Problem Solving (FPS) Alternates competition. In addition, the Future Problem Solving team composed of Sierra Todd, Claire Umstead, Brianna Madden, Lauren Hale, and Mallory Hlava made it on the final stage with a 4th place finish in the state. The 4th place finish qualifies the Lakers for the International Future Problem Solving Championship, which will be held in Bloomington, IN June 6-9.
Other competing members for the Lakers were Michael Okuda, Avery Wilmurth, Chance Roberts and Cole Emerson.
The 4th place FPS finish qualifies the CCMS team for the International Future Problem Solving Championship, which will be held in Bloomington, IN June 6-9. The FPSPI website states, “Future Problem Solving Program International involves thousands of students annually from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, and the United States. Founded by creativity pioneer, Dr. E. Paul Torrance, FPSPI stimulates critical thinking skills, encourages students to develop a vision for the future, and prepares students for leadership roles.” The Lakers are excited to compete in this prestigious tournament.
The state tournament is a continuation of an amazing season for the Lakers, which includes a Sixth Grade Showcase Championship, a fifth consecutive District Championship, a fourth place finish in the Regional Tournament, and a Science Bowl Championship. The Lakers are currently gearing up for the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.; the regional History Bee in Nashville, TN; and the FPS International Championship in Bloomington, IN.
The Lakers are coached by Mitch Hultman, Beth Morehead, Robin Simmons, Megan Futrell, Heather Duffy, Abigail Spann, Whitney Pile, and Scott Pile.
