LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/4/13)— Two police recruit classes and two fire recruit classes are funded in Lexington’s new budget, which took effect July 1.
Each division already has a group of recruits in training. The new police classes will allow the division to maintain its staff and train more officers for patrol and traffic duty. The additional fire classes will increase the overall staffing level and help reduce the need for costly overtime.
“Hiring new firefighters and police officers is incredibly important for boosting efficiency and lowering response times. This improves public safety,” Clay Mason, Commissioner of Public Safety, said.
In addition to the recruit classes, the new budget also includes funding for new public safety vehicles:
• $1.8 million for the purchase of 50-55 police cruisers
• $1.2 million for Division of Fire fleet, including one new ambulance
