LEXINGTON, Ky. (3/12/13) – Tom Blackman, a longtime YMCA executive and the Vice President of Operations for the YMCA of Central Kentucky for the past 12 years, will officially retire on Friday, March 15. He announced his retirement plans to staff and friends earlier this year.
“It has been a complete honor to serve the YMCA communities throughout my Y career,” Blackman said. “It has been a privilege to work with so many dedicated Y volunteers and staff to better our communities.”
Blackman’s Y career spans 43 years and seven different cities. He began his Y vocation in 1975 when he was named aquatic director at Greensboro Central YMCA in Greensboro, N.C. He moved up the ranks, serving as program director, branch executive, and CEO at various Y’s including Nashville, Tenn.; Richmond, Va.; Fort Myers, Fla.; Cookeville, Tenn.; and Knoxville, Tenn.
He became Vice President of Operations for the YMCA of Central Kentucky in 2001, following the opening of the Beaumont Centre and North Lexington YMCA branches in 2000. Since then, the Y has grown substantially to include more than 28,000 members and serves more than 66,000 people annually through programs and other services. He served as interim CEO of the Central Kentucky Y in 2009 and 2012.
“Tom has been an important member of this team for 12 years,” said President and CEO David Martorano. “He has been involved in many major initiatives at this and other Y’s around the country and his impact will be felt and appreciated for many years to come. We thank him for his countless contributions to our organization and wish him the best on his retirement.”
Avid cyclists, Tom and his wife Beth are looking forward to spending more time for travel and cycling trips.
