LEXINGTON, Ky. (3/27/13) – A pair of Winburn Middle School students received college scholarships for their performance in the 2013 state MATHCOUNTS competition, held March 23 in Lexington. Cici Mao finished third, and David Ma placed fourth. They squared off against more than 150 other math-letes from four dozen schools around Kentucky. The top-10 also included Winburn’s Ben Xie in eighth place and Ronit Kar in ninth.
The top four finishers were awarded full-tuition, four-year scholarships to either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville. Cici and David also won an expense-paid trip to the national MATHCOUNTS competition May 9-12 in Washington, D.C.
In the final statewide standings, Winburn came in third out of the 28 teams, and SCAPA at Bluegrass finished seventh.
MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program designed to develop and strengthen math, science, leadership and teamwork skills. This is the 30th year for the competition, which was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Insurance Co. and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
