emmaEmma Hamilton (Photo courtesy Cherish Buck)OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/9/14) – Two life-long friends, along with the mother of one of the two women, are in the process of raising as much as $15,000 for cerebral palsy.

Cerebal palsy is a group of disorders that can involve brain and nervous system functions.

Emma, two-year-old daughter of Morgan Hamilton, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Emma is deaf and suffers from epilepsy, too.

Hamilton said the problem was first discovered when her daughter couldn’t hold her head up at four months old. At 11 months, she saw a neurologist for a diagnosis. Since then, she has undergone additional tests to determine the options for surgeries and possible treatments.

Cherish Buck, mother of Kendra O’Bannon, friend of Hamilton, said helping Hamilton was something she immediately offered to do.

O’Bannon’s son, Braelyn, 3, was also diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and Buck said the issues they faced with Braelyn were concerns they shared with Hamilton in the hopes of helping Emma manage her diagnosis much faster.

For that reason, one of the goals for the fundraising money is to purchase a larger vehicle, such as a van, that can accommodate the two children, their wheelchairs, and other necessary medical equipment.

“The biggest problem is finding a van. With two car seats and wheelchairs, there’s not enough room to take both of the babies at the same time,” Buck said. “You’re talking about double trips.”

Buck said the doctors have encouraged them to make appointments for both children for the same day.

Utilizing the site gofundme.com, Hamilton’s friend, O’Bannon, and O’Bannon’s mother, Buck, are seeking help to cover costs associated with needed surgeries, medical procedures and doctors’ visits, and physical therapy.  

Another need for Emma, Buck said, is an iPad that would allow her to access an app for physical therapy treatment.

Funds to help Braelyn are needed, Buck said, but right now the focus is on helping Hamilton and Emma, since her medical needs are imminent.

She’s expected to undergo a medical procedure as early as next week, and will spend time at Kosair’s, tentatively scheduled for April, to allow medical personnel to monitor her seizure activity in order to recommend treatment options.
