EDITORIAL: U.S. Senate Candidates Have Task of Saving Coal

editorialKENTUCKY  (6/10/2014) – Alison Lundergan Grimes is running a spirited campaign against what she calls a “senator from the past”.  Grimes, a Democrat, is not getting much help from the No. 1 Democrat, President Barack Obama.

As Grimes enters the stretch against Republican strongman Mitch McConnell, Obama is moving to kill the signature industry of Kentucky ― COAL.

McConnell seems content to sit back and watch Grimes and her campaign staff squirm as the Obama Administration continues a series of political missteps and administrative blunders.

Grimes is blaming McConnell for his lack of action in stopping her party’s agenda on coal.  This appears to be a most curious way to defeat the second-most powerful, elected Republican in Washington.

For many, Mitch McConnell is the “poster boy” for why we need term limits.  But, we do not have term limits, and Kentucky voters need to understand the reality of the power structure in Washington, D.C.

With the Democrats in control of the U.S. Senate, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell holds little sway in overcoming the power of Majority Leader Harry Reid.  Reid, a staunch anti-coal Democrat, not only controls the vote in the Senate, but also decides which bills will be allowed out of committee for floor debate and vote.

To her credit, Grimes went on record early by strongly criticizing Obama for his attack on the coal industry. For decades, the coal industry has been Kentucky’s economic and power generator.  She also went on record early about the VA's deplorable treatment of veterans and calling for VA leader Eric Shinseki’s resignation.

Grimes is attracting a lot of dollars from all over to defeat McConnell.  McConnell is a threat to the anti-coal agenda; but, Grimes is not.

If Grimes wins, the Democrats will likely continue to control the U.S. Senate and Harry Reid will retain his position as Senate Majority Leader.  If McConnell wins, the Republicans will likely control the U.S. Senate, and McConnell may very well be the Senate Majority Leader.

Republicans in control of both the House and Senate would be able to keep Obama’s administration in check and preempt EPA overreach.

Grimes has a long, tough road to beat McConnell.  She somehow must convince voters that she can do more for Kentucky as a freshman senator than McConnell as senior senator (and possibly Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate).
