Second Installment of Mayor’s Art Club Artwork

art1PADUCAH, Ky. (4/2/13) – The second installment of the Mayor’s Art Club artwork is ready for viewing at City Hall. Lily Shapiro and Freda Fairchild are the featured artists from now through the end of June. The public can view the artwork when City Hall is open, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The artwork is located in the reception area and office of Mayor Gayle Kaler on the second floor of City Hall.

Photographer Lily Shapiro’s work will be on display in the Mayor’s office at City Hall for this second quarter. Shapiro, a 16-year-old sophomore at Paducah Tilghman High School, is the youngest artist featured in the Mayor’s Art Club. Daughter of Robyn Shapiro and Bob Shapiro, Shapiro had a camera in her hands before entering preschool. Her love of photography has been fostered and cultivated by her father, an accomplished photographer in his own right. In addition to her love of photography, Shapiro plays junior varsity & varsity basketball. She also is an avid hiker and mountaineer and an up-and-coming disc jockey. Shapiro has earned several awards for her work including Best of Photography in the 2013 Yeiser Art Center Teen Spirit Exhibition. Her photos have been shown at Etcetera, Tribeca, Clare M. Eagle, and Yeiser Art Center galleries.

The artwork of fiber artist and printmaker Freda Fairchild will be on display in the Mayor’s reception area at City Hall through the end of June. Fairchild, a Kentucky native, graduated from Berea College. After graduate school at San Francisco State University, she remained in California to teach before devoting herself entirely to making art. She studied at the Canadian School for Non-toxic Printmaking and now works entirely without the use of acids or solvents. Fairchild returned to Kentucky in 2001 to participate in the At Home Project with Judy Chicago at Western Kentucky University. She remained in her home state, buying a house and studio in Paducah. Fairchild has a rich and lengthy exhibition history. She has exhibited nationally and internationally including shows in Japan, Cuba, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and the United Kingdom.

Mayor Gayle Kaler initiated the Mayor’s Art Club in January 2013. At that time, she asked for artists living in McCracken County to submit photos of their work for consideration. A committee consisting of Paducah School of Art Director Paul Aho, Yeiser Art Center Executive Director Josh White, and Rosemarie Steele, former marketing director of the Paducah-McCracken County Convention & Visitors Bureau, reviewed the 27 entries and used a four-point grading system to narrow the list to eight artists. All forms of art were accepted, and the selected artists showcase a diversity of disciplines ranging from sculptors and ceramists to photographers, fiber artists, and painters. Each quarter of the calendar year, two of the eight artists will have the opportunity to display their artwork at City Hall.
