chemical spill 300PADUCAH, Ky. (4/12/13) – Emergency crews were dispatched to an injury accident on Cairo Road (KY 305) at the intersection of Ogden Landing Road (KY 358) at approximately 1:30 PM on Thursday, April 12.

The initial dispatch was that there was a large amount of smoke coming from one of the vehicles which was later determined to be a hazardous materials leak from an anhydrous ammonia tank that was being pulled by one of the trucks that was involved in the accident.

The investigation revealed that a 2001 Ford F-350 being operated by Mr. Laverne L. Schulte, 62, of Simpson, IL was traveling westbound on Cairo Road and was pulling two, 1000 gallon agricultural tanks containing anhydrous ammonia that were being delivered to a local farmer in West Paducah. Mr. Schulte is an employee of Southern Farm Supply which is operated out of Marion, IL. As Mr. Schulte was passing the intersection of Ogden Landing Road, a 1991 Chevrolet flatbed pickup truck with a utility trailer failed to stop at the intersection. The operator of the pickup, 24-year-old, Jason Wingler, of Symsonia, KY, was traveling eastbound on Ogden Landing Road prior to the accident. Upon reaching the intersection, Mr. Wingler failed to stop at the stop sign and then collided with the Mr. Schulte’s truck and trailers. The collision caused the tanks to break free of Mr. Schulte’s truck and overturn. One of the tanks was received damage to a pressure relief valve which caused the contents of the tank to release.

The Concord Fire Department responded to the scene and requested the assistance of the Paducah area hazardous materials team, HazMat1. HazMat1 responded and began assessing the situation. Hazardous Materials Technicians were sent to the spill site and determined that the contents had to be removed from the tank before it could be up righted. Residents on the eastern side of the spill within ¼ mile had to be evacuated from their homes while the anhydrous ammonia was bled off. Crews are still working at this hour to remove the contents of the tank. Traffic is being diverted from Cairo Road at Maxon Road and Mayfield-Metropolis Road and Cairo Road. Ogden Landing Road has been shut down at Cold Springs Road.

As of 2:30 AM, emergency crews completed the investigation and clean-up of the collision.
