Federal Grant Funds HCC’s Student Success Coach to Assist Students

hcc 01 300HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (3/27/13) – Hopkinsville Community College (HCC) has received part of a $2.5 million Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant awarded to the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS).

HCC has employed Kristy Howell as a student success coach with a portion of the funds from the TAACCCT grant. Ms. Howell will work with students seeking credentials in the industrial maintenance (IM) field. “The goal of my position is to help guide IM students through the higher education process,” explained Howell. “I will be focusing on the unemployed and under-employed worker in addition to the military student, but can assist anyone seeking an industrial maintenance credential. There are several services that I can provide the students that I’m working with, with the end goal of removing barriers to education.”

Among other services, Ms. Howell provides the following assistance:

 * Monitors student progress with industrial maintenance faculty
 * Assists with external services, like childcare and transportation
 * Assists with the financial aid and veterans benefit process
 * Provides letters of reference to successful program completers

Those who are interested in pursuing a career in professional and technical studies and would like the services of a student success coach may contact Ms. Howell at (270) 707-3714 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s website, TAACCCT provides community colleges and other eligible institutions of higher education with funds to expand and improve their ability to deliver education and career training programs that can be completed in two years or less, are suited for workers who are eligible for training under the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for Workers program, and prepare program participants for employment in high-wage, high-skill occupations. The Department of Labor is implementing the TAACCCT program in partnership with the Department of Education.

For most Pennyrile region residents, higher education begins at Hopkinsville Community College (HCC). The college serves thousands of area residents each year as a comprehensive regional learning center providing academic and technical associate degrees; diploma and certificate programs in occupational fields; prebaccalaureate education; adult, continuing and developmental education; customized training for business and industry; and distance learning. For most Kentuckians, higher education begins at the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). HCC is one of 16 KCTCS colleges on 68 campuses and more than 100,000 students. KCTCS is a critical component to transforming the state’s economy by providing citizens with the education and training needed for high growth, high wage careers.
