HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (4/11/13) – For the benefit of patients, Jennie Stuart Medical Center is implementing a robotic surgical system, hospital officials announced at a news conference today.

At a cost of nearly $2 million, the da Vinci® Surgical System represents the largest investment in a single piece of equipment by the hospital in its 99 years of service.

“There are few hospitals our size in America with a surgical robot. We are proud of this expansion of clinical capabilities for our patients across the Pennyrile region,” Eric Lee, president & CEO, JSMC, said.

A major capital acquisition of this kind required a vote of the JSMC Board of Trustees. The purchase was approved in February.

“With the purchase of the da Vinci surgical robot, we are providing the most up-to-date technology for Jennie Stuart patients and physicians,” Theresa Nichol, chair, JSMC Board of Trustees, said. “The robot uses advanced technology to enable surgeons to perform delicate and complex operations through a few tiny incisions with increased vision, precision, dexterity and control.”

“Administration and the Department of Surgery staff had been studying robotic surgical systems for more than a year. We accelerated this acquisition based on growing interest by members of our medical staff,” Beth McCraw, APRN, vice president, Nursing Services, said.

The first physician trained in the use of the system is Matthew Robinson, MD, FACS, a board-certified general surgeon. He has been a member of the JSMC Medical Staff since 2007.

"The da Vinci system will allow surgeons like me to perform minimally invasive surgery with more precision due to three dimensional viewing and laparoscopic instruments that allow more freedom of movement than current conventional instruments," Dr. Robinson said. “I am excited about the opportunity to provide this service to my patients."

Dr. Robinson, who is in private practice with Western Kentucky Surgical Associates, is scheduled to perform the first procedure via the robot within the month.

JSMC staff physicians in the specialties of gynecology, general surgery, and others are expected to be trained in the robotic surgical system later this year.

The da Vinci system is the leading robotic surgical system in use in the U.S. today.

JSMC is a private, not-for-profit health organization that includes an acute-care medical center; free-standing outpatient surgery, medical imaging, laboratory, rehabilitation, occupational health, and home health services; and an integrated physician network. Read more online at www.jsmc.org.
