HCC Foundation Honored Scholarship Recipients and Recognized Donors at the 2nd Annual Award Luncheon

MCC BENEFIT 500

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (5/9/13) – The Hopkinsville Community College Foundation, Inc. recognized donors and honored students who were awarded scholarships from the organization during the 2012-2013 academic year. The 2nd Annual Scholarship Award Luncheon was held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 9 in the Hopkinsville Community College Auditorium Building.

The event’s guest speaker was HCC alumnus Aaron Carew, MFA. Mr. Carew is a filmmaker who made his directorial debut with a short film entitled A Final Gift, which premiered to a packed house at Sony Pictures Studio in California earlier this year.

Mr. Carew started at Hopkinsville Community College while he was stationed at Fort Campbell Army Base. After two deployments to Iraq, he graduated from HCC in 2009 with an associate in arts degree. Carew then went on to complete a bachelor of arts degree in 2011, graduating magna cum laude from the University of California, Riverside where he also received the Chancellor’s Excellence Award in undergraduate studies for the University of California system. He recently completed his masters of fine arts degree from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, Peter Stark Producing Program.

HCC Foundation Secretary – Treasurer Scott Hancock gave accolades to donors. “Because of the generosity of our donors, some of whom are able to be with us today, the Foundation will award $95,680.39 in scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year. An additional $10,636.96 in support will be provided to the college for allied health programs and for the Frances Thomas Literary Park. In addition, the Indian Physicians Association for Community Service and the Billie Lee Cayce Scholarship Fund will provide an additional $5,650.00 in support,” explained Hancock.

HCC Interim President Patrick Lake shared information regarding institutional endowments. “In addition to the scholarship monies from the Foundation endowments, institutional endowments from the college will award $82,800 in scholarships for the upcoming academic year, for a total in private scholarship support to the College of $178,408.39 next year,” stated Lake. “What a great day for our college and our community! Our Foundation continues to expand and grow, thanks to your generous support. In August of 2008, the endowments of the Foundation were valued at $267,388. Today, the most recent value of the endowments is $2,233,397 – an increase of 735% in value,” Lake continued.

At the close of the ceremony, Christian County Attorney J. Michael Foster commissioned Mr. Carew a Kentucky Colonel on behalf of Kentucky Governor Steven Beshear.
