(3/8/13) – On Thursday, March 7, 2013, at approximately 3:29 PM, the Madisonville Fire Department (MFD) Received a phone call requesting assistance with a vehicle accident with a possible hazardous material spill at 5450 Dalton Road in Hopkins County.

HazMat-2 crew set up on the highway just north of the incident, while MFD, Engine 17, was staged at the intersection of HWY 70 and HWY 109. A fire crew arrived on scene and found that a Southern States truck transporting a Nitrogen farm mix had overturned, rupturing the tank and spilling approximately 2000 gallons on the roadway and into the ditches. Initial reports from the scene were that the driver was trapped in the vehicle and the scene was being contaminated with the leaking product.

Richland Fire Department, Hopkins County EMA, Hopkins County Sheriff Department and Medical Center Ambulance Service arrived on scene and had extricated the driver of the truck. The E.P.A. was also called to the scene as a precaution.

After researching the product it was determined that the roadway could be sprayed off and no further action was necessary. All Madisonville Fire Department units were released by command and returned to service.
