MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/26/13) – This morning, Mayor David Jackson presented an award at the Madisonville Community College to TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) for their Outstanding Achievement in Community Services for sponsoring the Girls in Engineering and Technology Program.

Mayor Jackson stated, “TVA does a lot of great things. They generate power over a broad section of the United States. But their power is not from the coal that generates our electricity, and it’s not the hydroelectric power that generates the dams or rivers they help regulate. The power is in the people. So what they are doing in this outreach is to reach out to the young ladies in the 6th grade and to expose them to great careers in engineering and mathematics to broaden horizons.”

The city of Madisonville acknowledges TVA for their valuable contributions to the citizens and to the Girls in Engineering and Technology for the last six years. Annually, this program serves about 300 girls in Hopkins county and about 250 in Muhlenberg County. This program also helps build confidence and expands their knowledge and career opportunities in science, technology and math.

Sarah Davasher-Wisdom, TVA , Program Manager, Valley Relations expressed, ”We are very pleased to support programs to promote science, technology and encourage young women to become involved in careers that historically been underrepresented. As I look over out on this crowd today I can’t help to say, Girl Power.”
