stevens retirementMADISONVILLE, Ky. (5/31/13) – Last night, Madisonville North Hopkins High School held a reception in honor of Hopkins County Schools Superintendent James L. Steven’s retirement.

“I’ve been associated with Mr. Stevens for 26 years of my Hopkins County Career and have worked with him in different areas. He’s always had kids first… it was always his motto. And he’s always made sure the things that would get done would happen. He’s done a great job in his education career here in Hopkins County. He will be hard to replace,” expressed Brad Johnson, Director of People Personnel of Hopkins County Schools.

Stevens became superintendent back in September of 2000, his 45 year career in education includes 42 years in Hopkins County as a teacher; coach; principal at Waddill Elementary School, South Hopkins High School and Madisonville North Hopkins High School; and assistant superintendent for facilities and safety.

Veronica Radford stated, “I’ve known Mr. Stevens since 1993, I started under him as principal… he was my principal. He did a great job, he was a great principal.”

Phoebe Slaton stated, “He was my principal for 15 years at Waddill Elementary School…. all I want to say… he was an awesome principal.”

Even though his present contract does not expire until June of next year, Stevens felt it was his time to retire and move into the next phase in his life.

“I certainly appreciate Mr. Steven’s years of service and dedication. Not only to the school system but to the community. He’s been a great contributor to our community in so many ways and will be greatly missed,” expressed Mayor David Jackson.

As superintendent, Stevens was able to accomplish the implementation of all-day kindergarten, a workforce readiness program that offers tuition support at Madisonville Community College, placement of a nurse in every school building through a partnership with the Hopkins County Health Department and development of School Counts, and establishment of Family Resource Youth Services Centers in all schools.

Stevens would like the community to know, “I’ve been blessed with great employees, students, parents and school board members. I’m thankful for all of Hopkins County for giving me this opportunity to serve in this capacity and I hope to be able, in my elder years to return the favor and do some community work for them.”

SurfKY News would like to congratulate him for his 45 years of excellence and wish him a wonderful and happy retirement.
