muhlenberg opp center 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (1/23/14) — During its bi-monthly meeting Thursday, the Muhlenberg Fiscal Court learned the new Muhlenberg County Opportunity Center construction completion date will be a little later than expected.

Originally, that project was expected to be complete this month, however, it is now expected to be sometime in early March, according to Muhlenberg Judge-Executive Rick Newman.

In other business, the fiscal court unanimously agreed to write a letter of support for the South Carrollton Missionary Baptist Church, which is seeking a grant from the Felix E. Martin Jr. Foundation to build a combination youth center/emergency relief shelter to be used in the event of storms, tornadoes or other natural disasters, according to Magistrate Joe Glenn Mitchell.

Although no discussion or votes were taken regarding broadband expansion in the county, Newman informed the magistrates that the initial phases of broadband expansion and upgrading throughout Muhlenberg County will begin soon.

"This is good news,” he said. “Broadband is an issue on which I have received many calls, since we have so many areas that are under served or have no service at all."

More details will become available as the fiscal court moves forward on this issue, he said.

Other items approved Thursday included the County Clerk's 2013 annual settlement and 2014 budget, the County Clerk's Dec. 2013 excess fees in the amount of $49,035.16; the Muhlenberg Sheriff's 2013 annual settlement and 2014 budget and the Sheriff's Dec. 2013 excess fees totaling $45,998.45.
