Second Annual Take a Kid Fishing Day

GREENVILLE, Ky. (6/6/14) — Last June, no one was really sure how many people would turn out for the first Take A Kid Fishing Day at Luzerne Lake.

Organizers were pleasantly surprised when approximately 400 young fishing enthusiasts showed up and fell in love with the event, hook, line and sinker.

Children ages 3 to 15, along with parents, enjoyed the day. Many children caught their very first fish ever. Many also went home with brand new bicycles and other great prizes.

This year's event is set for Saturday, June 14. According to Tom Barton, executive director of the Greater Muhlenberg Parks and Recreation System, last year’s day of fishing fun was not only a huge success as far as attendance, but it also had an added positive effect.

“I have noticed that since last year’s event, there is a huge increase in the number of people using Luzerne Lake,” Barton said. “I see people fishing there all the time now than before last year’s event. And by next year, we’ll have a new shelter, a walking trail and lighting.”

Barton said the same dedicated partners will help out with the big day again this year as well.

“Atmos Energy will supply free lunches and First Kentucky Bank will donate all the new bicycles,” Barton said. “We’ll give three bikes away in each age division. Each child will get a free T-shirt, free lunch, and a casting and reeling competition, with fishing tackle and other prizes.”

"All children between the ages of 3 and 15 are invited to compete,” said Barton. “The competition consists of four different age groups, 3 to 5, 6 to 8, 9 to 11 and 12 to 15. There is a $1 pre-registration fee per child. If the child is not pre-registered, there will be a $2 fee on the day of the contest.”

Barton said there will be no problem catching fish, since the lake will be well stocked prior to the event.

“Last year, there were tons of fish caught,” Barton said. “I know one child caught 16 fish. We stocked the lake the night before and we’ll do the same thing this year. Prizes will be awarded for the most fish, biggest fish and smallest fish. There will also be a casting contest and a reeling contest, with prizes awarded for each age group.”

Pre-registration forms may be picked up at Uncle Lee’s and all local banks. Forms should be turned in to any local water district office or the County Clerk’s office. Additional sponsors include Uncle Lee's, First Security Bank, the Muhlenberg County Fiscal Court, the Greenville Tourism Commission, the city of Greenville, and the Central City Convention Center the Pennyrile Resource Conservation and Development Council, Muhlenberg Fishing Team, Muhlenberg RSVP, and Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, First National Bank, Muhlenberg Conservation District, Pogue Group, Muhlenberg County Farm Bureau, the City of Greenville, Old National Bank, Harvey Family Towing, Double S Farms, H & R Agri Power in Owensboro, Crop Product and services in Anton, Beck Hybrids, Southern States and Wester's Body Shop.

Starting time is 9 a.m. and the competition runs until 12 p.m. Awards will be handed out as soon as fishing is complete. All parents and children should bring their own rod and reels, bait, safety jackets and any other items they may need. No boats allowed. Day of the event registration cost is $2. Registration forms can be turned into the water district offices in either Central City, Greenville, Drakesboro, Powderly and Bremen.

Forms can also be turned in at the Muhlenberg County Clerk’s office in Greenville or the Muhlenberg Conservation District. For more details, call (270) 377-1900.
