health screenOWENSBORO, Ky. (3/4/13) – Owensboro Health, a partner with the Indiana University School of Medicine, Evansville, located on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana, and cohort organizations—Deaconess health System, Jasper Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, and St. Mary’s Medical Center—has announced results of the first phase of a two-phase feasibility study to create and expand medical and health science education programs in the region.

A chief purpose of the study is to determine the feasibility of a graduate medical education consortium (GME) to increase the potential of retaining health care providers in the region. Owensboro Health’s physician recruitment efforts would benefit, said Ed Heath, vice president of business development and community health.

“Developing a GME consortium would be of tremendous value to us by helping to create an adequate supply of physicians in the region,” Heath said. “Doctors are more likely to establish practices close to where they finish medical school and their residency programs.

“Physicians in the future will deliver healthcare in close partnership with other health professions, such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners,” Heath said. “It would be a goal of the consortium to train healthcare providers in these roles, too.”

The consortium would have a board of directors consisting of various hospitals as founding voting members and variety of community health organizations, the IUSME medical school and community members as affiliate members.

Potential GME programs would include family medicine, internal medicine, OB/GYN, psychiatry and surgery.
