The Foundation rewards innovative and creative DCPS teachers and staff in the Foundation’s focus areas of HEALTH, LITERACY, and TECHNOLOGY. The Foundation added a new category for 2013: GREAT EXPECTATIONS. This new category is for DCPS employees who innovatively and creatively contribute to the education of our students but may not fit neatly into the three focus areas. Focus Awards finalists were chosen from over 45 nominations throughout the district.
The finalist selected in each area as the 2013 Focus Award Recipient received a $1,000 Foundation Grant to be used to enhance educational opportunities in his/her school or classroom. Remaining finalists received a $250 Foundation Grant for a total of $6,000. Recipients of the 2012 Focus Awards introduced the new grant recipients and shared nomination letters with attendees.
In recognition of the Foundation’s focus on health, the board recognized two DCPS graduates who are leaders in the health field in the state of Kentucky: Dr. Donald Douglas and Dr. Jason Yewell.
Dr. Douglas is a 1975 graduate of Daviess County High School and is an Interventional Anesthesiologist with Advanced Pain Medicine, PSC in Lexington, Kentucky, and has practiced medicine in Lexington for 30 years. Dr. Douglas and his wife, Carol, have three children, all of whom are currently in medical school.
Dr. Yewell, a graduate of Apollo High School, is a Board Certified Radiologist and Partner with Radiology Specialists of Louisville and is a Specialist in Body MRI and CT. Dr. Yewell also has a law degree from the University of Kentucky School of Law. Dr. Yewell lives with his wife, Mary Kaye, in Prospect, Kentucky. The Yewells have one son, David Grant Yewell.
Kentucky Music Hall of Fame retired music educator Shelia Ann Miller accompanied former student and soprano Lesley Wigginton Ferguson, who delighted the crowd with her renditions of "Think of Me" from Phantom of the Opera Musical and "Mein Herr Marquis" (Laughing Song) from the opera "Die Fledermaus". The Daviess County Strings Quartet directed by Karen Higdon provided arrival and dining music.
The board recognized event sponsors and the organization’s Founders Society members. Founders Society investors make a one-time donation of $1,000 to become lifetime members. Funds from Founders Society membership and general donations to the Foundation are distributed directly to DCPS classrooms and schools through Foundation programs such as the Focus Awards and Opening Day grants. The Foundation also provides opportunities for businesses to enhance educational opportunities through Business Founders and event sponsorships. Individuals and businesses may invest in specific classroom needs through the Foundation’s Wish List Program.
The Foundation’s next event will be Alumni & Friends Festival 2013 on August 23 and 24. Information about the Foundation and Foundation events may be found at www.foundationfordcps.org.
The Foundation for Daviess County Public Schools mission is to attain and allocate resources to DCPS to enhance, enrich and supplement learning opportunities for its students, staff and the community.
