PADUCAH, Ky. (2/28/13) – The Rotary Club of Paducah held its Speech Contest, Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the McCracken County Library.

Since the inception of the 1994 Rotary District Speech Contest, the annual topic has been the Rotary International President's chosen theme for his year in office. This year's Rotary President, Sakuji Tanaka from Japan chose the theme "Peace Through Service." He notes "In Rotary our business is not profit, our business is peace. Through our service we learn empathy for others. We come closer to people who seem very different from us. And we begin to understand how alike we really are. However we define peace, whatever peace means to us, we can bring it closer through service."

The speech contest was open to all Paducah city and McCracken County schools and students prepared their speech by discussing how peace can be accomplished through service. Students researched and offered their own personal insights and perspectives on this year’s topic. Speeches were memorized with no notes used during the contest.
