MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/11/13) – The Kentucky Literacy Celebration week came to an end yesterday with the Young Authors Festival held at the Parkway Plaza Mall in Madisonville.
The Kentucky Literacy Celebration week is a yearly event accredited by the governor’s office. This event also recognizes the importance of youth reading and writing.
This year’s theme for the Young Authors Festival was “Humor.” The event was open for kids in Kindergarten through eighth grade. Each entry was judged based on creativity, content, neatness, illustration and following guidelines. The students also had the option of writing non-fiction or fiction. This year there were 725 students who entered their work in the 14th Annual celebration here in Hopkins County.
Guest speakers this year were a mother and son team, Lin Oliver and Theo Baker. Baker wrote both “Sound Bender” and “The Shadow Mask.” Oliver is known for her “Hank Zipper” series that she wrote with actor Henry Winkler.
Both authors were really impressed with the creativeness, dedication and the amount of community support the students had.
Baker expressed, “These kids are so creative, and every book title out here makes me want to read it.”
The winners for first through third places received metals and the district winners were honored with backpacks filled with books and other prizes.
