Junior Achievement Looking For Volunteers in Daviess County

jr achievement 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/11/13) - Junior Achievement of Western Kentucky is looking for anyone who would be interested in volunteering for their organization to help better Daviess County’s students’ success.

Junior Achievement is a national organization that helps prepare kids for the real world by teaching them the skills they need to get a job and keep a job, showing how to effectively manage money, and also teaching them the value of contributing to their community, according to JuniorAchievement.org.

Junior Achievement of Western Kentucky utilizes 400 volunteers yearly in 17 different communities in the area. The program serves 65 percent of Daviess County, but the volunteer population is very dense. Volunteers can be parents, college students, business people, people trained in Human Relations, or anyone looking for volunteer opportunities, according to JA President Dan Douglas.

“There are many, many opportunities for local folks to get involved with us,” Douglas said.

Volunteers would be trained and given the materials they need to present financial literacy and soft skills curriculum with important concepts such as effective resume writing and interviewing skills, how to resolve conflicts, and the importance of teamwork in the workplace, according to Douglas. There are opportunities to volunteer at various times at Apollo High School, Daviess County High School, and Owensboro High School. Volunteers will give presentations in the same classroom once a week for a five to eight week period.

“A lot of what we do, they are not touching on in the schools,” Douglas said. “It’s for anyone who has a desire to better Daviess County and better prepare the kids for their futures.”

Not only does volunteering for Junior Achievement of Western Kentucky serve students, it also benefits the volunteers as well. Volunteers will hone public speaking skills influential to professional development, and receive community service hours some businesses require their employees to have.

If you are interested in volunteering for Junior Achievement of Western Kentucky, call 270-684-7291.
