MURRAY, Ky. (3/27/13) – The Calloway County High School Academic Team ended the most successful season in school history, with a 4th place Quick Recall placement, two 2nd place individual finishes, and 26 total team points at the 27th Annual KAAC Governor’s Cup Competition March 15-18 in Louisville, KY. The Lakers began their 2013 Governor’s Cup season with a District Champion title before being named Region 1 Champions in February. The team advanced 13 individuals to state, the largest number in school history.
In Quick Recall, the Lakers defeated Oldham County High School and DuPont Manual High School in pool play to earn a number 1 seed for their portion of the bracket placement in the remainder of the single elimination tournament. The Lakers next defeated Muhlenberg County High School to advance to the “Smart 16”, before defeating Corbin High School to advance to the “Elite 8”. The Lakers fell to eventual champions Pikeville High School in the “Final Four” and earned the fourth place finish with a loss to Campbell County. The Laker Team consisted of starters Landon Fike, Captain, Cody Bergman, Nate Clause, and Hudson Elliott with assistance from Josh Betts, Simon Mikulcik, Sam Morehead, and Cassidy Neal.
In individual written assessments the Lakers saw success as well. Cody Bergman scored 2nd place in the state in Arts & Humanities, while Landon Fike also earned 2nd place in Science.
The team is coached by Erica Gray and Beth Morehead.
