Matt Bevin may be a Serious Contender for Senate

matt bevinOWENSBORO, Ky. (11/16/13) - Matt Bevin officially filed his candidacy for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate on Friday, but many still don't know much about the candidate who will be going up against frontrunner and senior Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Bevin, a Louisville businessman, recently spoke with SurfKY about why he thinks McConnell should be replaced, stating that he is a “big believer in term limits.”

“I don’t think anything good comes from going to Washington for decades and decades,” Bevin said.

Some say Bevin can no longer be considered an outsider in the competition, a candidate whose only purpose was to strengthen the campaign of Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes. Bevin's participation in the race divided McConnell's focus and forced him to fight a primary as well as a general election. However, as Bevin's support grows, that concept is being reevaluated. In October, Bevin received a huge endorsement by the Senate Conservative Fund.

Senate Conservatives Fund Director Matt Hoskins said this about Bevin in a statement: "Matt Bevin is a true conservative who will fight to stop the massive spending, bailouts, and debt that are destroying our country. He is not afraid to stand up to the establishment and he will do what it takes to stop Obamacare. We know that winning this primary won't be easy. Mitch McConnell has the support of the entire Washington establishment and he will do anything to hold on to power. But if people in Kentucky and all across the country rise up and demand something better, we're confident Matt Bevin can win this race.

Bevin, like most conservatives, opposes the Affordable Care Act, known also as ObamaCare. He told SurfKY that legislators should “scrap the act completely and start over with real solutions to the problems that exist.”

“The idea that a bunch of people that don’t work in the medical arena in Washington are making decisions for the rest of us is why we have this absolute mess of an Affordable Care Act,” Bevin said.

Bevin’s solutions are to start to address the “real needs” of the people by allowing them to buy health insurance across state lines. He explained that there should be block grants that allow states to make decisions at the local level to decide on pre-existing conditions for healthcare patients.

Bevin also told SurfKY he is a big proponent of the REINS Act in Kentucky. This act makes sure that regulatory agencies like the EPA can't shut down coal manufacturing, according to Bevin. He stated that these are taxes being manipulated by unelected officials, are “destroying our economy,” and “suffocating the entrepreneurial sprit of this country”.

“The EPA is killing coal, not only in Kentucky but in this country,” Bevin said. “It’s coming in at a tremendous cost to thousands and thousands of families and to the economy as a whole. The government should not be picking winners and losers.”

The economy is the number one topic for most politicians and in Bevin’s candidacy, it’s no different. Bevin believes that one of the biggest problems with the U.S. is that the country gives too much money to foreign aid.

“Why are we giving money to governments that hate us?” Bevin told SurfKY. “I think we could do a lot to reform our foreign aid policies. This idea that we can buy friends with American tax-payer money is a fool’s game…I think the American people deserve a better accounting with their tax money.”

Bevin might still be considered the proverbial dark horse candidate running against seasoned professionals like current Kentucky Secretary of State Grimes, (who is now tied in recent polls with Senator McConnell, according to the Huffington Post) but that doesn’t mean that he won’t fight for the finish line.

“The American people need relief,“ Bevin said. “We need jobs, we need less taxation, and less regulation, or the economy will never ever recover.”
