spelling beeOWENSBORO, Ky. (9/18/13) -”Xylocarp. Xy-l-o-c-a-r-p. Xylocarp.” That, of course, was the spelling bee scene in the 2004 movie, ‘Mean Girls’. Spelling bees are portrayed in movies constantly and even on national television with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, but Owensboro will soon see a not so “typical” kind of spelling bee on Saturday, Sept. 28.
 
The 4th annual Bee For Books fundraiser sponsored by the Daviess County Imagination Library will be held at Owensboro Christian Church where teams will compete to raise $10,000 for children’s literacy. The Imagination Library’s mission is to make sure all children in the Daviess County area have the materials needed to practice reading. Each child eligible for the program, based on socio-economic conditions, is given 12 books a year, which costs the company $30 per child. The Daviess County Imagination Library has currently served 2500 kids in the area.
 
For the library’s annual fundraiser, 20-25 teams of adults and youths will compete for trophies in a collaborative attempt to spell some pretty difficult words. There will be three rounds. For each round, the team will be given a word and has to be able to spell together in 30 seconds. If the teams are knocked out of the first round, they are able to pay their way back in for the fee of sponsoring a child to receive a years worth of books. They cannot, however, buy their way out of victory for the third round.
 
There will also be competitions for the most decorated team and best fan.
 
“We encourage fan support,’ Kim Johnson, Fundraising Volunteer for the Imagination Library, said.
