OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/27/13) - The Owensboro Fire Department is gearing up to 'go pink' in support of breast cancer awareness. Beginning Oct. 1, the OFD will be wearing and selling pink "Firefighters For a Cure" t-shirts. Firefighter Brian Roberts decided to coordinate this campaign after his grandmother and mother-in-law both battled breast cancer.

Since October is nationally regonized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Roberts told SurfKY News he wanted to "bring this cause down to the local level."

However, this is just one of many campaigns the department holds throughout the year. According to Fire Chief Steve Mitchell, several of his firefighters work to raise money for multiple organizations.

"Our firefighters are involved in the community and with fundraising for various charities," Mitchell said. "During October, they will be allowed to wear their pink t-shirts in place of their normal uniform shirts."

The t-shirts will be sold throughout October for $10 at both Fire Stations 1 and 3. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

The 'Making Strides Against Breast Cancer' walk will be held in Smothers Park on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m.
