Katie-FullerMADISONVILLE, Ky. (8/22/14) — Origami Kusudama is an ancient form of art that originated in Japan by using a paper model that is either created by sewing or gluing multiple, identical, pyramidal units together through their points to form a spherical shape.

“What I do is a form of origami,” said Katie Fuller. “However, hardcore origami enthusiasts don’t really consider it origami because there is glue involved. It is still considered an art of folding paper. I get a lot of my inspiration from vintage items or anything that is history based.”

The word Kusudama derives from a combination of two Japanese words; kusuri, medicine and tama, ball, which was created to use for incense and potpourri burning.

Fuller said when she was about 9 or 10 years old, she learned origami.

“My dad learned origami when he was little, then, he taught me origami when I was a little girl, too,” said Fuller. “I have always been really big into arts and crafts. I have been doing this for over two years now, and I have learned to put my own twist on my stuff.”

Fuller mainly works with paper, specifically old books she has collected.

“I mostly just do crafts with paper,” said Fuller. “It’s unique and not a lot of people do it. The Kusudama balls are actually made from old books … a whole book.”

Fuller takes pages from old books and cuts, folds and glues pieces together.

“Cutting, folding and gluing takes anywhere between four to five hours for one flower ball,” said Fuller. “It's 60 petals that have to be individually cut, folded and glued. This may take a long time, but it’s therapeutic for me.”

Fuller has recently started making pieces for weddings.

“I have worked on a couple weddings so far,” said Fuller. “I have made the bridesmaids’ bouquets and groomsmen boutonnieres. These pieces should last forever, well longer than flowers. They don’t have to worry about pressing them in a book and are way better than artificial flowers. ”

Handmade by Katie is located in Main Street Jack’s off Seminary Street.

“This is something new I have started,” said Fuller. “I used to sell to Amanda’s on Main, but then I decided to go the route of having my own booth and Main Street Jack’s rents out spaces. People can also message me on Facebook for orders.”

Fuller says she loves the idea of people buying her art.

“I love the fact that someone loves something that I have worked really hard on,” said Fuller. “It makes me really happy, when they display my pieces in their home, and enjoy it as much as I did making it.”
