Former Kentucky Ag Commissioner Pleads Guilty in 'Unforgettable' Court Case

richie farmer 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (9/5/13) – Former Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture and University of Kentucky basketball star Richie Farmer has reached a plea deal with prosecutors in a government corruption case stemming from his eight-year tenure in office.

According to a press release from Farmer's attorney J. Guthrie True, Farmer plans to plead guilty to charges relating to the misappropriation of funds while serving as Ag Commissioner. He's also facing other pending charges from the Office of the Kentucky Attorney General against him and his sister for alleged state law campaign finance violations.

Farmer was accused of multiple negligent acts, including hiring his friends for high pay and low responsibility positions, taking guns and other gifts ordered for a 2008 conference, and taking state equipment for his own personal use. The items and money could not be accounted for at the end of his term.

A former UK basketball star, Farmer was a member of a team known as “The Unforgettables” during the 1991-1992 season. The team made a run to the East Regional Championship in post-season game play.

If the plea agreements are accepted, Farmer will receive a sentence that ranges from 21 to 27 months in prison, and fines totaling over $120,000.
