Mayor and Council to Recognize 2013 Scholars

graduate diplomaHOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (3/19/13) – Tune in tonight at 6pm to City TV Channel 12 (on Time Warner Cable) or watch the online live stream as Hopkinsville Mayor Dan Kemp and City Council celebrate this year’s top 10 Mayor’s Scholars essay writers.

Through this district-wide competition, ten students have earned Chamber gift certificates redeemable at over 100 participating local businesses – $25 for those essays judged 2nd through 9th place and $50 for the 1st place essay. Students will also be recognized at a School Board meeting next week.

Mayor Kemp commented, “We want to encourage students to consider their future educational options as early as possible, so we’ve developed the Mayor’s Scholars program criteria to mirror that of the Rotary Scholars Program in hopes that students will consider that tremendous opportunity.”

To be named a Mayor’s Scholar, students must have a 2.5 GPA, maintain a 95% attendance rate, and attend a Christian County Public Schools middle school. Eligible students submitting an essay outlining their future education and career goals were named Mayor’s Scholars last week and are invited to attend a day-long field trip to Murray State University main campus on March 28. Fifty-nine scholars were named this year.
