Greenville Firefighter/Cancer Victim Returns Home on Sunday

nmlb 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (7/29/13) – With the blast of sirens and a long line of fire engines leading the way through Greenville Courthouse Square on Sunday, 19-year-old Greenville firefighter and cancer victim Caleb Harvell was escorted home after receiving his first round of treatment for cancer.

As reported by SurfKY News last week, Harvell was taken to Muhlenberg County Hospital earlier this month complaining of severe pain. He was then diagnosed with cancer and has begun chemo and other treatment at Baptist Hospital in Madisonville.

Due to his surprise return from the hospital Sunday afternoon, there was little time for his growing number of supporters to gather on the courthouse square. But those who did turn out stood cheering and waving posters with messages of encouragement as Harvell was whisked through the courthouse square.

Making a brief stop at the Greenville Fire Department, Harvell told the crowd "I am ready to roll. Where is my radio at?" said the young man known as KB said, referring to his radio equipment used by firefighters.

Harvell's father, Phillip Harvell, is a training officer with the GFD, and the two shared hugs with well-wishers along with smiles of appreciation for the words of encouragement from those gathered outside the firehouse.

The family will have only a short break at home before returning for more chemo and other treatment back in Madisonville.

Phillip Harvell served as a firefighter in Illinois before the Harvells moved to Greenville approximately 2 years ago. Caleb has impressed and inspired many with his strong example of courage and dedicated commitment to continuing in his father's footsteps, aspiring to carry on the family tradition of fighting fires.

Members of the GFD are busy planning a poker run on August 16th in conjunction with the GFD Friday Bike Night. You can also help by purchasing a “Fight Like KB" t-shirts. Also, a trust fund has been set up to help with medical expenses at First Kentucky Bank in Greenville.
