Muhlenberg Sheriff Warns About Scam

scam alert burg 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (11/1/13) - The Muhlenberg County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies are continuing to receive scam related complaints.

This week the Sheriff’s Department was contacted by an individual that received a check for $2030.10, appearing to be valid. An accompanying letter explained that the check should be deposited into the recipients account; and within 6 to 12 hours, $1560.00 was to be withdrawn and sent per Western Union to an Assigned Receiving Agent.

It is very unlikely that the check would clear and the victim would have been shorted the $1560.00 if they had participated.

The mode of operation involved in this scam indicated that the person was going to be getting paid for doing a service that involved going to certain businesses and evaluating their performance.

The Sheriff’s Department encourages all Muhlenberg County Residents to be extremely cautious when dealing with deals that appear too good to be true. It may also be helpful to consider the following tips:

1. Speak with someone you trust. If you are in question about any contract, phone call, mail, or advertisement discuss it with someone that you trust for an additional opinion. Commonly those who operate scams ask victims to keep information confidential, explaining that “this deal is not for everyone.” This is often a strong clue that someone is attempting to con you.

2. Consider getting caller I.D. so that you only speak with those you are comfortable speaking with.

3. If you do speak with telemarketers, never give out personal information. (Credit Card Numbers, Bank I.D. Numbers, Social Security Numbers, etc.)

4. Do not fall for statements such as: you must pay to win, you must pay now, I need your banking or credit card info, the prize is in the mail, etc.

5. When having service work done such as home repairs, use reputable repairmen/companies and get references and make sure your contract is in writing.

6. Remember that scams may vary in nature. It is common for con artists to contact victims via phone and traditional mail but may also attempt to contact victims through electronic mail, social media or by showing up at a residence.

7. Con Artists are innovative and often use new techniques in an attempt to steal your monies.
