Madisonville Fire Report – Boat Fuel Leak and Dumpster Fire

firereports2011new b 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (5/24/13) – On Thursday, May 23, the Madisonville Fire Department (MFD) reported three instances of activity within the Madisonville city limits.

At approximately 10:00 AM, MFD received an alert from Central Dispatch requesting units respond to the Hopkins County Fairgrounds for a dumpster on fire. Upon arrival, Engine 17 found that there was a coal mining rescue operation drill in progress. The coal mining company was hosting a cookout for their employees and had placed some hot charcoal ashes inside the dumpster causing a small fire. Engine-17 crew deployed the 150’ of 1.75” and a 10' attic ladder to access the dumpster. Using water with Class A firefighting foam the fire was quickly brought under control. Overhaul was performed to prevent a rekindle and fire units cleared the scene without any other incident. All fire units returned to quarters.

At approximately 7:17 PM, MFD received an alarm from Central Dispatch for a fuel leak from a boat in the Kroger parking lot. Upon arrival Engine-16 crew met with the boat owner and they told they had just filled the boat with 20 gallons of fuel at the Kroger fuel pumps and noticed a stream of gas leaking from the craft. The owner then pulled down into the parking lot away from the gas pumps. Fuel was leaking from the drain of the water craft and approximately two gallons of fuel was on the ground. Absorbent was spread across the spilled fuel and the bucket was used to catch the leaking fuel. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to locate the origin of the leak. Fuel was siphoned from the fuel tank within the boat to stop the leak. The owner purchased two fuel cans from Lowes to transfer the captured leaking fuel. The owner was cautioned to wash the engine compartment before starting the boat engine. A water/foam extinguisher was used to wash down light fixtures on the trailer. No other action was taken. All units returned to the stations.
