Local Historian to be Featured on KET Documentary

haunt 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (7/15/13) – A local historian and tour guide is being featured in a documentary special on KET this fall.

David Wolfe, the man who brought Owensboro its first ghost tour, told SurfKY News that KET approached him about doing the documentary, featuring highlights from his downtown tour, “Haunts of Owensboro.” On Tuesday night, Wolfe invited local residents to a free ghost tour downtown that just happened to coincide with the filming of the documentary.

“You’ll all get the chance to be on TV tonight,” Wolfe told the small crowd gathered at the Crème on 2nd Street, just prior to the start of filming. During a tour which lasted approximately an hour and a half, Wolfe took the group to the place where they could hear the most interesting, and perhaps frightening examples of ghostly activity.

Representatives from KET first began contacting Wolfe through the Owensboro Museum of Science and History.

“Fortunately, the filming just coordinated where I was not out on the road as Lincoln and I didn’t have tours booked for Haunts of Owensboro,” said Wolfe.

Wolfe is also an Abraham Lincoln impersonator. He travels nationally giving his first person presentation of the life of Abraham Lincoln. This is Wolfe’s sixth year as the owner/operator and tour guide for Haunts of Owensboro.

“It was really just one of those things where I looked around downtown, and just realized that Owensboro could use something like this,” said Wolfe. “We didn’t have anything at the time.

According to Wolfe, prior to launching Haunts of Owensboro, he had to spends hours researching and developing the tour. He conducted interviews, collected information and stories from the local library, poured over records in the Daviess County Courthouse. The research he has collected may also become a book in the near future.

“I went down to Savannah, Georgia, and watched not just ghost tours, but historical tours, also to get a feel for how they were conducted,” said Wolfe. “I went on them and studied them and a light bulb kind of went off and I knew I could do this.”

Wolfe said he was able to combine his past acting experience and storytelling experience to make the tour what it is today. The tour can change each time, however.

“I try to change it up every year, whether it be by stories or by locations, and there are more stories in the area than just downtown. The Miller House, the Anderson House, the old Library and the Campbell Club are all great locations for stories,” Wolfe said.

The Haunts of Owensboro documentary will air this October 26 at 8 p.m. on KET.
