West Louisville Elementary Earns Grant

school lunch2 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (9/18/13) – West Louisville Elementary School was recently notified it has been awarded a Fuel Up to Play 60 grant and is hosting a celebratory luau on Friday, Sept. 20. The school has purchased a smoothie machine with grant funds and students will be invited to take part in a “taste testing” experience with various fruit flavors during the lunch period.

WLES cafeteria manager Brenda Fulkerson applied for the grant to support the school’s ongoing programs to encourage healthy eating and healthy lifestyle choices for students. WLES participates in the DCPS Farm to School program, serving locally grown fruits and vegetables in the cafeteria. Students also enjoy “grow a pizza garden” and “milk mustache” activities throughout the year.

The smoothies will be used as classroom rewards, schoolwide celebrations and as part of afterschool program activities. The smoothies will be served at breakfast and lunch at West Louisville Elementary School as a fun and tasty way to encourage students to enjoy more fruits and healthy food choices as part of their daily diet.
