oboro public school1 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (3/19/14) — Owensboro Public Schools are celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the OPS Fine Arts Festival at the RiverPark Center beginning March 24 and running through April 2.

More than 2,500 students from throughout the school district will perform and/or have their artwork on exhibit. All performances are free and open to the public and begin at 7 p.m.

Performances are:

  • March 24 - April 2 Visual Arts Exhibit

  • Monday - March 24 Orchestra Night

  • Tuesday - March 25 Choir Night

  • Wednesday - March 26 Band Night

  • Tuesday - April 1 Theatre Night

  • Wednesday - April 2 Dance Night

“The Arts have become such a part of our district and such a symbol of our success that we could easily take it for granted. To be part of a district that is committed to the Arts being accessible to every child at such a high level is truly a remarkable situation,” said Tom Stites, OPS Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator.

“Each year, we have over 50 percent of our students involved in performance. Collectively, 30,000 OPS students have performed on stage or had their artwork exhibited over the past fifteen years! To stage evening performances in a professional venue for Orchestra, Choir, Band, Theatre and Dance with over 700 works of Art also on public display is pretty amazing. The commitment from our district that every school is represented and that every child has the opportunity to participate is truly remarkable,” said Mr. Stites.

He estimates audiences have totaled 100,000 during that 15-year period.

“We chose the theme "Art & Soul" this year as an expression of our Arts program in the district. The Arts are entwined in every event you can find from athletic events, PSTO meetings, school assemblies, community parades and concerts. When you include the Arts so deeply in a community, it creates a feeling that is unique and makes Owensboro and the Owensboro Public Schools a very special place to be,” he said.
