Coffee Lovers Give Back with ‘Pay it Forward’ Board

pay1 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/15/13)—Random and anonymous acts of kindness are one of the surest ways to brighten the day of both the benefactor and the recipient of the act. A Cup Of Common Wealth, a recently opened coffee shop located at 105 Eastern Avenue, helps Lexingtonians give a little back with their “pay it forward board.”

Customers can pay for a drink for a random person, specifying both the type of drink and the type of recipient on the “pay it forward board.”

“A coffee for a fireman, a mocha for someone who has lost their job, a tea for someone who attends Georgetown College, a macchiato for a single mom,” co-owner Salvador Sanchez named just a few of the many things that were listed on the board. “Just in the past two weeks we have found that this community loves to help each other out.”

If you walk in and see something that relates to you on the “pay it forward board,” the drink is yours.

Sanchez told a story about a man that came in last week who had hitchhiked his way through Kentucky and was trying to make it home to his family. He had lost his job and was need in a pick me up. The man left that day with a smile and iced coffee in his hand.

“Meeting people everyday that want to help others is just one of the perks in this job,” said Sanchez. “The rest just comes with seeing people happy from giving or receiving.”

For co-owners Sanchez and Chris Ortiz it was a dream come true when the shop opened two weeks ago.

“I have wanted to open a coffee shop for the past 15 years but something always fell through,” said Sanchez.

Sanchez and Ortiz became friends in Texas before moving to Lexington about two months ago and opening the coffee shop at the beginning of July.

“We are much busier than we expected to be,” said Sanchez. “The community has really embraced the pay it forward board. Lexington is all about the community.”

A Cup Of Common Wealth is open Monday through Saturday from 6 am to 10 pm and Sundays from 7 am to 10 pm.

My visit to A Cup of Common Wealth inspired me to add one more thing to the pay it forward board: a smoothie for someone who has accomplished something.
