Snow Days HB211 Passes House, Moves to Senate

comm kentuckyFRANKFORT, Ky. (3/17/14) – The Kentucky State Senate Education Committee unanimously passed House Bill 211, Monday, March 17.

According to a spokesperson for the Kentucky Legislative Research Commission the bill, which would clear the way for school systems across the state to waive up to 10 days due to bad weather or other emergencies was passed 11-0, with one senator absent.

The LRC spokesperson stated that the vote will now move to the Senate floor for debate.

As written, the bill states that HB211 would "restructure the approval process used by the commissioner of education to waive the makeup of 10 student attendance days, permit teacher delegates to attend regional or district professional meetings held on days when school is open and provide a process to waive the makeup of student instructional days missed during the 2013-2014 school year, allow makeup of emergency hours, and declare an emergency."

The bill must still be approved by the full house, the senate, and be signed by Gov. Steve Beshear in order to become law.
