Arrests Made in Hopkins County Coal Metal Theft

arrest twoHOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (5/15/13) – On Tuesday, May 15, 2013, the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) received a complaint from an employee at Hopkins County Coal that someone had gotten onto their property and had removed a transformer from the dragline located on their property.
 
During the investigation, a truck pulling a trailer and 4-wheeler was observed leaving the area. After a short search, there were two subjects in the vehicle found to be in possession of several items used to cut the metals and there were items located in the truck found to have been taken from the drag line site.
 
The two subjects, 35-year-old Ricky Miller and 22-year-old William Hawkins were charged with theft of two transformers valued at over $10,000 each, Obscuring the Identity of a Machine (the serial number/vin number was removed) from the 4-wheeler they possessed, and Criminal Mischief 1st for the damage caused to the dragline.
 
The individuals were found to be in possession of several acetylene tanks and torch heads used for cutting the metals, and also found to be in possession of copper metal recovered from one of the stolen transformers.
 
Both suspects were arrested and housed in the Hopkins County Detention Center
