Community Youth Express Emotions Through Art

light chance 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (5/17/13) – The Madisonville City Park was host to the Light of Chance Spring 2013 “Breathe” Showcase last Tuesday night, May 14.

Light of Chance is a non-profit, culturally diverse community based youth development program that was founded in 2005 by Madisonville native Eric Logan. The mission is centered around providing a creative outlet for struggling youth in area schools grades 5-12, to express themselves through specific events, workshops, programs and creative disciplines such as dancing, painting, writing, singing, providing opportunity and promoting a high quality of life for the individuals.

Tuesday’s Breathe Showcase featured dance and vocal performances by many talented youth members of Light of Chance, as well as some of their painted art displays in the background, reflecting their emotional expression of current issues such as peer pressure, bullying, and recently, the tragic incident where many of the students lost two classmates from James Madison Middle School. These two students were Jon King and Machaela White, lost on March 8 during a family trip to West Virginia. The students released balloons as a memorial and tribute to the two lost classmates as a way to show their love and honor them.

Every spring and fall seasons the students showcase their talents by performing original vocal and lyrical presentations, artistic and originally choreographed dance, painting and instrument playing in the “Breathe” feature. This spring, over 20 members participated in the show, with exceptional talent, entertaining the community of guests who filled the lawn in front of the stage by the lake at the Madisonville City Park.

The Light of Chance program operates every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Rosenwald-Smith Center, located at 208 N. Kentucky Ave., in Madisonville. Logan’s Light of Chance program operates in the community of Bowling Green as well.
